Sunlight and light from incandescent sources are incoherent, comprised of rays of varying direction and wavelength. Laser light, by contrast, is coherent light, light of a single wavelength and direction. In a coherent form, the power of the light is maximized, similar to the effect of focusing a sunbeam with a magnifying glass. In this state, light can be put to work in a variety of ways.
